Imagine that you are a schoolteacher. For years, you have taken it upon yourself to organise an event or assembly to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27. You do so, not because you are required to — and not necessarily because you have any Jewish students at your school — but because you believe something deeper: that any education worthy of the name must confront this dark chapter of human history. You believe that the unprecedented, industrialised murder of six million Jews and, indeed, millions of others considered inferior by the Nazis is a matter of universal moral responsibility. You believe that remembrance is not only about honouring the dead but about equipping the living to recognise where hatred and indifference can lead.
