Celebration of Israel often provides an access point for those who are less affiliated to their local shul, as well as those who are, so it is good news that the South Manchester cross-communal Yom Hazikaron ceremony and Yom Ha’atzmaut Party is becoming a mainstay of the community calendar. Beginning with a ceremony of remembrance, the event for Yeshurun, Hale, Bowdon and Shaare Hayim congregants led into a full-on party with a band, Israeli dancing, food stalls and fun.

Evaluation from Rabbi Chanan Atlas:

‘The programme was very successful. It provided an opportunity for the less affiliated to still feel part of the community, enhanced Zionistic feelings and was an excellent celebration of Israel’s 70th anniversary. It strengthened ties with the local Israeli community and brought the 4 South Manchester Shuls closer together.’

Participant Feedback:

  • ‘The event was terrific. I feel proud to be a member of the wonderful Yeshurun.’
  • ‘This was a beautiful, touching ceremony and celebration joining communities.’
  • ‘Excellent event. It was fabulous to see the shul hosting all the south Manchester shuls and showing how vibrant Yeshurun shul is’
