Event

Hillock Hebrew Congregation signed up to the ShabbatUK experience for the first time this year, and after an uplifting weekend that saw their numbers boosted to 40 people, hopes to repeat their success next year. An atmospheric service was followed by a catered lunch that gave attendees the opportunity to bond with others who they had met previously, but not had the chance to properly engage with.

Objectives

To promote a stronger understanding of the customs of Shabbat

To demonstrate how enjoyable the Shabbat experience can be

Evaluation from Clive Weller:

“All attendees were very complimentary on entering the Shul and seeing how it had been set up for our luncheon. I read out the lovely message that was sent from the Chief Rabbi, which was well received. I felt it was a successful social occasion and that the ethos and whole “unity” aspect was appreciated. The general feeling was that we would like to join in next year, all being well. I was very pleased that we participated in the way that we did, and appreciate the initiative taken by the CRE in this way.”

Participant Feedback:

  • Our small Shul is not in a position to put on many events due to a small membership, but this event was an exception and I was honoured to be part of the organising and attendance. I believe it strengthened us as a community
  • I knew a lot of people there so it was nice to meet up with friends. A great opportunity to affirm my Jewish identity in a social context
  • I gained much pleasure from having the extended company of those who I normally just see during the service
