With an aim of reaching both regular members and less frequent shul-goers, New West End put together a novel ShabbatUK programme that featured sushi, a sought-after speaker and a Seudah Shlishit joint with Central Shul. The programme kicked off on Friday night with an uplifting Friday night service, before a Japanese-themed sushi Friday night dinner. Leading Orthodox Jewish comedian and writer Rachel Creeger spoke both after dinner and after a community lunch the following day.

Evaluation from Gavin Lief, Treasurer:

‘All those who participated in New West End’s ShabbatUK progamme found it an uplifting experience and we had a number of non-regulars attend some or all of the events, which will hopefully encourage them to come more often. The community has been speaking about the great atmosphere and warmth that they experienced during the weekend; it allowed people to meet as a community and spend time together in a relaxed environment.’

Participant Feedback:

  • ‘It was fabulous. The organisation was brilliant and Rachel Creeger was an excellent choice of speaker.’
  • ‘I certainly had a spiritually uplifting Shabbat with just the right mix of communal activities and thought-provoking discussions.’
  • ‘That was just such a great Shabbat. It was wonderful to be with friends and family.’
